The ford timing belt renewal interval is 100 000 miles / 10 years. My question is if a ford focus 1.8 petrol has covered 100 000 miles or is 10 years old, and the mechanic changing the timing belt and tensioner considers that the idler pulley is still working properly and doesn't change it, how is the car owner supposed to know when in the future it will need replacing?

When the belt was changed, the tensioner pulleys should also have been changed, because if these fail major damage could occur to the engine. Now you asked when would you know when the pulleys needed renewing,if they wasn't renewed when the belt was changed.Answer is you wont, that's why everything should have been changed as a kit. If your lucky you may here the bearing "roaring"before its about to fail, which will mean get it done quick.

He should of defiantely changed it at the time, because if the pulley failed and caused the cam belt to fail chances are your engine would be knackered 'cos when the belt snaps the pistons hit the valves causing them to bend and sometimes damaging the pistons, meaning that you will need a new engine.
