History, kids. When a "single" record was released, (1950's, '60's, '70's) it would have one song on each side of a 7 inch vinyl record that played at 45 rpm (rotations per minute). The hit song would be on one side. The song on the other side was the "B side". Usually, the B side was a throwaway, filler or album track. The ones that weren't on an album sometimes were more rare and eventually valuable. Some Beatles singles hit the charts for the songs on both sides.

On a single there are usually two, three or four tracks, otherwise it wouldn't be worth buying the CD. One of the songs is the main song, which is on the cover, and the others might be others taken from the same album, remixes of the single, live songs or completely new songs. All the songs other than the main song are called B-sides. The name comes from when singles were on LPs (records). On side A would be the single, and on the other side (the B-side!) would be anything else.
Hope this helps!

B-side songs are released on the same record as a single to provide extra "value for money". There are several types of material commonly released in this way:

a different version (e.g., instrumental, a capella, live, acoustic, remixed version or in another language/text) of a song
another song from the same album, which the record company does not want to release on its own
a song not considered good enough for the album
a song that was stylistically unsuitable for the album
a song that had not yet been completed at the time of the album's release
