A very good question. One of the most important obstacles in life is dealing with the mind. It is the cause of countless problems. It prevents peace, causes much suffering, unhappiness and ailments and destroys relationships. My teacher/guru used to say that it was critical that you watch your thoughts at all times. His teaching was that every individual was in truth a profoundly great and wonderful being, and that it was important to honor yourself and all others as being so. We were told to never entertain thoughts that demean yourself or others and in all thoughts and actions we should honor that truth. The first teaching was to make a friend of the mind. That even though the mind is by nature restless, be grateful that it is so and use that quality to enable you to grow. He very much encouraged us to repeat a mantra(a holy or sacred word or phrase) over and over again until the mind would finally grasp on to it and eventually it would totally pre-occupy the mind. At later stages the mind would become peaceful and begin to enjoy the mantra. Then there would be no room for self destructive and harmful and critical thoughts. After a considerable time and great perseverance that becames true. The mantra even continues during sleep.and that enables you to have profoundly deep and refreshing sleep. This practice of mantra repititioin is one that yogis use to awaken the kundalini, the dormant spiritual energy in everyone, and that is what takes them to ever greater experiences of profound spiritual attainments and bliss.
