It stinks that I can't offer the entire sentence so that you can see the context. I'm editing a manuscript for someone before it goes to the publisher, and I am required to keep the content private.

It depends on the information you have.

"this can be therapeautic...." <---do you have actual information that states that whatever it is you're talking about is proven to be therapeautic?

"this may be therapeautic...." <----if you have some information, or information that isn't quite sure, of it w/e it is you're talking about it therapeutic. Or if it is just an opinion of you, a doctor, the source, etc.

My Dad plays this game when I call and say "Can I speak to Mom?" He says "Yes you can" and then just stays on the phone until I say "May I" and then he says "sure" and calls for her.

Agree with the above. Consider "might be", too. And don't ever confuse "may be" with "maybe"!
