Go to the AKC website and look at the breeds online-you can get standards, breed info, and links to rescues and breed clubs. I talked to several rescues and breed clubs before deciding on my dog. You need to look at size (based on the indoor/outdoor space you have) energy level of the dog vs what you will ACTUALLY committ too. Don't get an English Setter if you don't walk 30 min a week yourself, but if you walk 5-10 miles a week then go for it. Look at the time/upkeep you will need. A cocker spaniel will need grooming but a JRT won't (but the JRT will shed). Do your research, narrow the top 2-3 breeds and then call and talk to groups that know the breed. I wanted a mini schnauzer but the breed rescue advised against it because I have a young child. I settled on a Brittany (spaniel) and she is awsome with my son, a fast learner, but very quick to get into trouble if not being watched. It will depend on what you are willing to make time for in your life.

Well, you have to look at your personality, how often you plan on exercising the dog, how much food you can afford to buy each week, and how big your house is, among many other things. We can't give you an answer without a little more information.

get a free dog from your local paper. find someone who is trying to get rid of puppies. you will find that you will love any dog that you own, no matter what breed it is.
