A pleco won't normally attack a healthy fish and kill it. The cichlid was already dead when the pleco found it.

Nitrate levels in your tank have risen.
The pleco was sucking off the slimy covering from the cichlid which protects fish from infections. The pleco was doing it so that the cichlid catches an infection and dies which would make the conditions in the tank a lil more bearable.

Pleco eat algae, not fish (unless already dead).
