You'll want to start by buying a quality rebuild kit from a place like NAPA and a bucket of carb cleaner. Disassemble the entire carburetor, check to make sure the throttle shafts aren't worn out, and soak all the metal parts overnight in the bucket of carb cleaner. Then carefully reassemble it the next day using the replacement gaskets and rubber parts from the kit.

My experience with rebuilt carburetors from most auto parts stores has been that a teenager with minimal mechanical knowledge can rebuild a carburetor in dad's basement and come up with a better carburetor than one from an auto parts store. No exaggeration - I've compared both. Most parts store rebuild carburetors have been put together from several different models, often with mismatched parts, and may not even have all the problems that made people turn them in for a core charge fixed.

If you want to have a pro handle this, either have a trusted mechanic rebuild it, or take it to a carburetor specialty shop run by a car guy who understands the process. Just say no to parts store carburetors.

Buy a repair kit for the model of carb that you have, remove the carb and disassemble. Soak all the parts in a good carb cleaner, not the spray junk,. Blow the parts with air and ensure that all passages are free of debris. Reassemble using the instructions provided in the kit. Pay attention to the float settings/measurements. Reinstall it, make the final adjustments and your go to go.

you are better off to get a rebuilt carb. the cleaners are kinda toxic and setting the internals is not something i would recommend for a first time on your own , does it need a tune up too , how is the compression ?
