i'm being bullied as i have to have an assistant to push me everywhere, and no one is interested in being my friend, what could i do to try to get them to see me, not just the wheelchair.

(eventually i would like to get a partner that is there, so i want to try to specifically target him)

I am not sure how old you are. You are obviously older simply because of the nature of this letter. Is it possible kids are not intimidated by your disability but by the assistant pushing you? They may not feel you want to be approached since you already have someone with you.

Maybe you could speak to your teachers or assistant to see if they could help you connect with positive people in your classroom. Another suggestion would be to find someone who has made eye contact with you in the past (eye contact and smiling are two great ways to determine interest) and ask your assistant to push you over so you can say hi. If you watch what they do, (like if they are reading a book you like, etc.) you might be able to find common ground to start a conversation.

I am a one to one nurse to a wheelchair bound man. Some kids do not realize they can approach him, due to my being with him all the time. It is scary to take the initiative but you disposition seems to be positive. Good luck to you.

You have a right to be heard, and treated with respect, regaurdless of a disability or not.

If your at work/school or social event, talk to people around you, tell them what your interests are, and what you hope to gain, show them you are as capable to do things for self, even if a little limited. You would be surprised how many people will talk to you once you initiate the conversation.

As the lady said before me, some people can feel threatened by the assistant/carer or just the wheel chair, or their just sure how to approach you.

If your feel your assistant/carer is not respecting your wishes, & needs, talk to them and tell them how and what you want, if this fails then talk their employer.

The other option is contact a disability group who specializes in advocacy, and ask them for support in how to get what you would like out of life.

If you have returned to sudy, talk to the school or unversity counselor, most universities have a Disability liasion Officer, so if your at uni then talk to the DLO. As they are trained to assist students with disabilities, from mild to profound.

If you have any particular interests e.g music, then join a musical band. Joining a club is a great way to met people, and enjoy your self.

Good luck with every thing, and hope you find youself a lovely caring partner.
