Some people have the B@LLS to get into all kinds of people business. Its not that dag on drastic! you did good by only giving the death eye... i would have said something back to her... and i dont play nice!
Its still safe to eat lunchmeats when you are pregnant. there are just precautions that you have to take when eating them (buying them)
There are at least two areas of concern in regard to eating lunch meats while you are pregnant: nitrates and listeria.
The biggest concern with lunch meats during pregnancy is the risk of listeria. Listeria is a bacteria that can be found in deli meats as well as vegetables and processed foods. This bacteria can cause an illness known as Listeriosis, which can cause any number of problems during pregnancy such as:
- Miscarriage
- Premature delivery
- Infection to the newborn
- Death to the newborn (about 1/4 of the cases of perinatal Listeriosis result in stillbirth or neonatal death.)
To avoid getting listeriosis from cold cuts, reheat the cold cuts until steaming. In addition, avoid soft cheeses, refrigerated pates, cooked seafood, and practice safe food handling.
So like i said, its ok to eat them as long as you take some precautions.

Listeria, a type of bacteria found everywhere, can cause a food-borne illness called listeriosis, which is extremely dangerous for a pregnant women and her unborn baby. Listeriosis can cause premature delivery, miscarriage, and fetal death. A pregnant woman is more susceptible to listeriosis because of the normal pregnancy changes that affect your immune system. Listeriosis may cause flu-like symptoms with fever, chills, muscle aches, diarrhea, and upset stomach. It can take a few days or even weeks to appear. Consult your doctor if you have these symptoms or believe you have eaten a contaminated product.
You can eat this item, but you must make sure it is cooked properly. Do not eat hot dogs, luncheon meats, or deli meats unless they are reheated until steaming hot.

I'm surprised your OB didn't tell you about this. Pregnant women can generally keep eating the same way they were before pregnancy with a couple of exceptions, lunch meat being one of them. Like has already been said lunch meat can carry Listeria and can not only make you sick but can harm your baby... not to mention nitrates contained in some lunch meats.
You should also stay away from sushi, caffeine, sugar substitutes and fish that is high in mercury.
Congratulations and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy. Hope you have a healthy and happy baby!

This information scared me also when I was pregnant. You just have to be careful. Make sure you wash your hands very well and of course, don't eat any meat that has been sitting in your refrigerator for too long. When in doubt, toss it out.
I found this on another site...
"Bacteria and parasites that can contaminate foods are a major health threat. To unborn babies. Listeria can cause defects and misscarage. When shopping avoid any foods that have not been well refrigerated or keeped on ice, steer clear of jars that are leakey or don't pop up when you open them, cans that are rusty or dented. Never eat raw or undercooked meats, runny eggs, stick to pasteurised milk products. HOT DOG AND COLD CUT MEATS can also be contaminated with listeria as they often sit around at warm temps and are handled often so best to AVOID. Dont worry too much about the meal that you have just had, unless you have developed bad symptoms of stomach illness within a few hours of eatting"
I loved italian subs when I was pregnant for my second child. I never got sick, you just have to be careful.
Good luck with the pregnancy and cograts!

Dont worry too much about it. The thing is that some lunch meats if not heated can cause Listeria which is bad for the baby. However I have always eaten at Subway and had sandwiches here at home during all 4 of my pregnancies. It rarely happens..Here is some info on it.

There are certain soft lunch meats and cheeses that are not really cooked so are unsafe to eat. But the regular lunch meats you buy at the grocery store should be fine. I'm not sure of the names of the lunch meats you shouldn't eat, your OB/GYN should know. Also stay away from the soft cheeses that are unpasteurized, like feta cheese, these carry bacteria that doesn't affect us but can be harmful to unborn babies. Good Luck.

I heard that there grew to become into extra of available with deli meats than prepackaged... yet in all honesty, I ate chilly meat sandwiches with the two one among my pregnancies and my toddlers have been in basic terms wonderful. My OB reported that its ridiculous the quantity of issues that pregnant women persons are informed to stay away from at present, in case you go by technique of each and every thing you study in the books then the meals you would be allowed to consume would be extraordinarily limited. in basic terms use your superb judgement. stay away from meats in the event that they're uncooked, or scent humorous or have issues turning out to be on them or in the event that they're expired. Oh and that i scooped my cat muddle jointly as pregnant too and no subject concerns there!

Some lunch meat could contain listeria which could be very harmful to the baby....
There are certain foods that are considered to be of high risk of Listeria contamination. The foods to avoid in pregnancy include:
Soft white cheeses eg. Ricotta, brie, camembert, blue vein and fetta
Pate
Unpasturised dairy products
Cold meats
Dried/fermented sausages
Raw seafoods eg. Oysters, sashimi
Smoked seafood (canned is okay)
Pre packed and prepared salads
Soft serve ice-cream
In pregnancy this bacteria can pass across the placenta and reach the baby. Listeria during pregnancy can cause abortion, premature rupture of membranes, premature birth and very sick babies. Listeria infections are not new, however it has only been known since 1980’s that it can be passed onto humans through food.
Hope this helped...you can google listeria during pregnancy to get more information..Good Luck!

there is nothing wrong with eating lunch meat while pregnant! She could be confused or she may just want or think you should eat only healthy homemade foods I dont know. Really fish is the only thing you need to be careful about because of the mercury or raw meats (food bourne illness.) Good luck with your pregnancy!
