You may be a little short on cash. Many will probably say go to http://www.dell.com and they may have some good deals. I went to Newegg. The cheapest Laptop will run about $535 that shipping and all. It is an Acer. On the right you can read Reviews from people to see what they think. There a Link for All Reviews. The only thing I know to get a good deal would be look around some stores. Sometimes they may have a Display model on sale. A good place for this is the Proverbial Wal-Wort. I was at one here and they had a few Toshiba Laptops marked down for less than $500 and then the tax. Well good luck in your endeavor, I hope you find something good that in your price range.

$600 for the cheapest Dell and free shipping; http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/inspn?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Tigerdirect have some less than $500. There a HP/Compaq and Refurbished Compaq for about $430 and an IBM?Lenovo (May be IBM before Lenovo got them) Refurbished T-40 after rebate $480? The IBM may be nice, but, we never promised we recieve rebates. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=17

You might concentrate on figuring out what you need the laptop for and what configurations would be best for you. I would consider refurbished, as there can be some great deals.

If you only browse the web, send e-mail, do word processing and chat then a very inexpensive Pentium 2 laptop for $300 would work fine. You could then search google for "used laptops" or "refurbished laptops" and check out what the vendors there have available. If you need a working battery, as refurbished often don't have a functioning battery search google for "cheap laptops" and check out the vendors that sell inexpensive new laptops.

Consider how you will connect to the Internet and make sure the laptop includes the appropriate connection. Wi-Fi can be added to most laptops, if it is not included.

To be sure the vendor is trustworthy see how long they have been in business and call their 800 number before buying to see how they treat their customers. If you buy and have a problem, then you want to make sure that it is not compounded by poor customer service.
