Hi Fantasia
Yes its shocking how expensive London accommodation can be I do agree! There are a few trustworthy online agencies that do offer competative rates for London hotels... like the one i run for example (shameless plug) http://www.hotel-assist.net. We strive to offer the best rates in all our hotels and demand 'rate parity'.... this means that the price you see advertised should be the lowest price available anywhere online. We directly negotiate with them to bring you the best rates possible. It is also quite common for hotels to be cheaper using our service than if you approach them directly (this is due to the high volume of bookings we place). We also do not add booking fees - our service is free to you.
We've been running over 10 years so you can rest assured we're not scammers.
Drop me an email directly if you'd like me to help you out with your search.
Oh and by the way, Expedia use a system called GDS - which, due to the very nature of the way it works, cannot be cheaper than us. If you do a like for like comparison on any of the hotels we offer you will see.
Good luck with your accommodation search.

You still have time to organise a house exchange, much better than a hotel. You get a whole house, not just a room, and usually a car swap too. True you probably won't be in central London, but you'll save money. Try homelink.org.uk and intervac-online.com

They probably aren't scammers -- but they aren't being up-front and honest, that's for sure...
A lot of online hotel reservation sites (http://www.orbitz.com , http://www.expedia.com , http://www.hotels.com , etc. etc.) will list the base room rate and/or the pre-tax total on the 'availability' page to lure you further into the site, then show you the post-tax/fees total at or near the final booking page. They figure, you've made it that far and you won't go somewhere else, or that you won't be paying attention (which you are...good for you!)
I've seen plenty of sites (http://www.resideo.com/ , etc.) that do a good job of displaying the full price at all times during the booking process.
Good luck!

If you are willing to take a little risk, try naming your on price in Priceline. I did that the last time I went to London and ended up at the Kensington Hilton for $89 a night - so nice!
