Vista is a resource hog...there was an article a while back I read that said 4GB of RAM is the "sweet spot" for Vista. I think 2GB would be sufficeint for normal use.

Did you have another system before on your Intel Core 2 Duo processor, or did you buy that with Vista? In the first case it is logical, Vista needs a lot of support by the hardware, much more than xp did, and if the processor is okay, maybe the graphic card isn't. If you had before other hardware, I can't tell with what you are comparing.
Actually Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 GB RAM (nearly a Ferrari among processors) should do even for Vista, but if you had the same with xp, Vista will be slower. You have given the Ferrari slow tyres.

What version do you have?
Vista is usually not the sole cause
The culprit is the programs you have installed and running in the background taking up sys resources
quick fix: turn off the AERO interface, use windows basic
long term: purchase more RAM (at least a gig)
offtopic but kinda related:
I have a Northwood pentium 4 3.4ghz w/ 2gb and it runs like a champ despite a few memory errors luckily my memory has a lifetime warranty
edit: people that say Vista is a memory hog are mistaken, read this post in a technology forum: http://www.jcxp.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=15591
to others that say you should get another operating system, her computer is a core 2 duo most likely it came with Vista so reverting back to XP is not an option. if it was purchased recently return it and have them ship you a sys with XP. of course, before you do that back up your files to removable media or a friend's external hd

very possibly.. vista may be really cool and well designed, but if you want it to run at "todays speed" (i.e. instant) you need a very fast processor and a lot of ram to run it properly - maybe even more ram than you already have, lol.
Also, if you haven't restarted your computer in a while, try restarting it to delete the temp stuff and free up some cache memory.

+++ i find it kinda hilarious that microsoft says you need a minimum 800MHz system w/minimum 512MB of RAM; minimum means with this config, is like comparing phone line internet vs. T1 internet

Your operating system is defective. I recommend replacing
it with one of:
http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.opensolaris.org
Windows generally, and Vista in particular, are needlessly
CPU and memory intensive. These other OSs give you
much better performance on lesser hardware.
