In reality, there is NO time of the year that rates will be best. You can get a ticket in-season as cheap as you can out, you just have to be crafty in your search techniques. There are certain markets that are seasonal. Example Key West in Summer is cheaper than in Winter. The opposite for Seattle. I fly weekly, and book my own flights, and am cost sensitive. I've found that there are two tools you use. One is a meta-search engine like kayak.com or farechase.com (kayak preferred). Combined you must search southwest.com (they don't distribute their tickets on other web sites). Those two sites alone will net you your best ticket price. BUT....be sure to use the tool that enables you to check flights within a day or so within your preferred travel dates. I frequently find changing my travel dates by a day may net a huge discount.

If you will need a hotel...THAT is what should dictate when you travel. Hotel rates change wildly and frequently. A special event in a city, like a football game or big convention, will cause hotel rates to rise, but it will not effect air fares similarly. I suggest you give stronger consideration to hotel rate shopping then go air fare shopping. Kayak.com again suggested for hotel shopping.

Well I'm from California. Its cheaper I think during this time. Summer is not hear yet but when it gets hear it will go up. Lots of people go to LA to hit up Mickey mouse, rollercoster, and clubs. I'm from up north and I make my way down every summer to see family and get a hotel and relax. Staying by Disney land is probably a good place to stay if you go and its only a hour from Downtown LA

Check surrounding airports as well. Sometimes Ontario or Long Beach is better than LAX.

avoid all the big holiday weekends and look out for fare hikes. other than that you should be able ot get a decent deal.
