That is not good. Think about looking at ads for replacement monitors. If a repair place will give you a free estimate for repairs look at that (especially if it was LCD). With new monitors frequently on sale those repairs are usually not economical.

First though make sure you have really turned the brightness way up. Move the contrast from one end of limit to the other to see if it is the problem. If there is a reset control on the monitor try pressing that. If there is a gamma adjustment (usually on the control panel settings) see if you can get more whiteness using that. If all that fails your monitor is gone.

If you want to avoid paying a lot try looking on Freecycle.org. They have had a lot of 17" CRT monitors given out for free lately because people are switching over to LCD monitors and need to get rif of the older style ones.

is it a flat screen LCD or a CRT monitor?

if it's a LCD.. it's the inverter or back-light

if it's a CRT.. just buy a new one or better yet a flat screen LCD

either way, have a licensed computer technician look at it - they have the parts for repair at hand

in the interm just use an old monitor
