form a downward slope away from your house. make the slope fall 1 inch for every foot. make the slope at least three to four feet out from your house along the area (make the slope as far as you need)... then direct the lowest part of the slop towards a path to direct the water away.. you can dress up the little path/channel with river pebbles or any material that won't float away as water is flowing down the channel/path.

1 inch to a foot is fine. Lot of talk about french drains, but proper grading is a much better long term solution. Depending on the degree of water problems you may incorporate both. Especially if you are dealing with ground water not just run off.

I don't know how much of a slope you have. But what we did was dig down and add a drain pipe, then fill over the pipe with crushed stone to level with the house. The land went downwards. The water was then transported down the back of the house with the drain pipe. The drain pipe has holes in it to collect the water. It was very helpful to us. Not sure what kind of landscaping your looking at.

Flower has the right idea. Why destroy your whole yard because of this. I would like to add that they have a fabric to keep the soil from clogging the gravel that you can lay over the gravel so you can cover it with a layer of soil.

Water runs down hill so a couple of degrees should do it.
