It seems that everyone younger than me (LOL!) thinks our present world is the most enlightened, most advanced generation of humanity ever.

Please explain to me. I don't get it. Thanks.

They have been handed everything on a silver platter and sheltered from the horrors of the real world by their parents. They only know what they have been taught.

Too few kids really understand what is currently happening in Iraq or Dharfur. They think the prejudice is when someone calls someone else a name -- they have no idea how many millions of people have been brutally slaughtered just for being born into one particular tribe or religion.

These over-protected children take what they have for granted, and assume it is like that for everyone. They think that racial/religious/socioeconomic struggles are ancient history, and don't realize that there are people living in horrific circumstances at this exact moment.

Even the class prejudice that was so blatantly obvious during the flooding of New Orleans has quietly been swept under the rug, and the news is more focused on Britney and Anna Nicole than the REAL issues of greed and corruption that are destroying what the United States and democracy were supposed to stand for.

"Ignorance IS bliss" -- think about it.
People choose to get so swept up in the petty dramas of their lives (e.g. "The neighbor's SUV is bigger than mine! whatever shall I do?") and the media is happy to distract us with the petty dramas of the rich and famous so we'll keep consuming and competing -- which puts money back into their own pockets. The majority of those who live comfortably in Western society are FAR from enlightened; most of them are sheep in the machine of commercialism.
