Who was the first non british or irish player to play the English league, what team did he play for and when did he play for them.

In other words, you paved the way for foreign players in English like Henry, Zola and Cantona?

There was a German striker Max Seeburg, who played for Spurs in their first season in the league in 1908/9.

There have always been non-British/Irish players in English football. Bert Trautman springs to mind. He was a German prisoner of war in England during WW2. After the war he stayed in England and played in goal for Manchester City, becoming very popular and best known for playing with a broken neck in the 1956 FA Cup Final.
EDIT: Who paved the way for foreigners in the modern era is highly debatable.
There was Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa who joined Spurs in 1978, but if we are talking about the first huge star coming to England it would be Jurgen Klinnsman joining Spurs in 1994. Cantona was already playing in England then but was pretty much unheard of when he first arrived at Leeds.
