I am starting to teach beginner piano lessons in the Buffalo and Rochester, NY areas- does anyone have any ideas on how to advertise without spending a ton of money to start out?

i'm a guitar teacher, and if you can get a job at the local music store doing lessons, thats pretty much the easiest way to stay full all the time. its hard to compete with a store that gives lessons, they advertise, have a customer base, and people that are just considering music will walk in there, which they probably wont do at your house. lol.

but, to start out, i'd say make up a few flyers and put them up at school bulletin boards. make sure your rates are competitive, but dont undersell yourself. it doesnt cost much to print up a few sheets, and then just put them in places where kids and their parents go. once you're a little more esablished, thats when you can spend some money on it, and at that point you'll already have a pretty good amount of clients.

good luck!

YES to both. One of my sons took piano at 5 and the other just started guitar (he's 7--but was 6 when he started.) Look for a teacher who understands kids and what they can do developmentally. If the teacher tries to force them beyond what they are developmentally ready for, the child will get frustrated and probably want to quit. Look for a teacher who structures their lessons and practice time within the limits of a 6 year old.

See if you can touch base with the local school around you - they might let you advertise in their music departments for free - or the teachers might tell their students about you. Check with the public as well as private schools.

Take advantage of free online directories, like BookMyCity. Make sure your name is absolutely everywhere!
