You know each group believes they are the most intelligent or enlightened. The truth is both groups have extremely brilliant members. Liberalism and consevatism are merely life philosophies which really have nothing to do with intelligence.
I observed this first hand many years ago while in school. I had 2 professors. They are both dead now. Their political philosophies were 180 degrees apart, and they were best friends. One represented President Nixon in his Supreme Court battle over the Rosemary Wood's tapes. The other was appointed to a committee to help rewrite the Federal Rules of Judicial Procedure, and was oftened called upon to address the judiciary of various federal courts of appeals.
They were each brilliant and though of different philosophies, had the capacity to appreciate and cherish the other's intellect, and joke with the other about their views.
I'll be honest, we need more William F. Buckley's and fewer Ann Coulter's, more John Kenneth Galbraith's and fewer Michael Moore's.

I am going to go out on a limb here and make the strange claim that neither of the qualities you mentioned in your question should be related to political orientation (sarcasim intended). I do not know if there are any statistical studies that compared the level of income, education etc of adherents to the two parties, but I believe that there are well educated people in both camps. I am getting tired of the questions on this site (from both sides) that accuse the other side of being "unamerican", "less educated", "cowards" etc.

Depends whose had the education and wisdom. There are republicans who claim they are out for the welfare of everyone but in truth look only for those who are like themselves and are far behind in research; while there are liberals who blindly support something but have no backup. Clearly there are both intelligent and stupid conservatives and liberals. I myself am a liberal, but I look on both sides of the story instead of blindly go on about something I know nothing about, I respect both sides of the story.

Perhaps it would be better to distinguish between well read and wise.
Education in and of itself is useless if it has no practical application.
Wisdom is the application of available knowledge.
To put it in basic terms.
Knowledge is knowing that it's raining.
Wisdom is opening the umbrella.

Most people who are well educated become liberal in their thinking unless their major is in politics or business.

I'd say there is a higher percentage of conervatives on here that actually discuss the issues and do not focus on slandering people. Do a study for fun got through a couple of pages of questions and see how many of the lib questions have to do with personal issues and how many of the conservative questions do and then look at the same things for issues.

We've already heard the answer from both sides: LIBERALS HAVE OVERRUN HIGHER EDUCATION!
Heh. Are liberals supposed to take that as an insult? I think it says a bit about who's the wiser and better-read.

Libs, in general.
"Another factor that correlated closely with misperceptions about the war was party affiliation, with Republicans substantially "more likely" to hold misperceptions than Democrats. But support for Bush himself as expressed by whether or not the respondent said s/he intended to vote for him in 2004 appeared to be an even more critical factor.
The average frequency of misperceptions among respondents who planned to vote for Bush was 45 percent, while among those who plan to vote for a hypothetical Democrat candidate, the frequency averaged only 17 percent"
