they shouldn't get nothing, this system celebrates and help the inmates too much, you commit a crime, and then you go there and it's fine, you get food, gym, school and everything, that's why the system sucks, i'm from Dominican Republic, and down there we do not celebrate crime, you pay for it, I know that you think that it's inhuman, but think about it, people come out and they don't want to go back, but you see what happens here, you do it, they give you a chance, you do it again, and they give another chance etc, you end up going back and for, not good my friend.

What do you expect prisoners to do while they are locked in their cells. Its all very well and good saying the prisoners should be punished, they are being punished in so much that they have no freedom and have to work while they are outside the cell. Boredom breeds contempt, so they must be occupied within the cells.
Some may say prisons are like holiday camps, that's absolute rubbish, they want to try being locked in one and they'd soon change their opinion!
You have no choice on what you do and where you go, there is no freedoms to come and go, you lose all choices that you have on the outside, you don't chose your food, your work, your get up time, your lights out time, when your washing gets done, when your meals are served, nothing. For six months I never so much as switched off my own light, and I was never even charged with any offence, and still haven't either, almost a year and a half later, still thats Spain for you. But if you have never experienced it, you haven't a clue, and as for those that do it then take the mickey, its all bravado, they will have been seriously pissed off if they were of average intelligence and above, only the stupid people would say its a great life

It is unfair. They should get a book a week and if they cant read then give them a kids picture book to keep them entertained. These people are in prison for a reason and most of the time they have gotten away with crimes before they are finally locked away anyway.

Anything that keeps them quiet is probably a good thing from the Prison Officers' point of view.

I agree with you, a modern gymnasium, colour satellite TV,
pool tables..makes it sound more like a holiday camp than a prison.Make it more austere,if they don't like it,they shouldn't do the crime!!!..It's a punishment,not a reward!!
They would be much less likely to re-offend if prison was horrible, lots of the scum nowadays don't mind going back..no wonder.

I've never really sorted out in my mind how much prison is about punishment (or retribution) and how much it's about simply minimising risk in society by keeping criminals locked up. If it's mainly the latter then it doesn't matter. I don't honestly know the answer.

some prisons do
And some prisoners live 10x better than most of us. Some prisons are more like hotels, and I know that the one my buddy is in is often referred to as the hotel.
Why don't you tell me why you think it is wrong?
