Mg will be in the middle. It has 12 protons, 12 neutrons, and 12 electrons. A Cl will be on each end to form a line. Cl has 17 protons, 18 neutrons, and 17 electrons.

These atoms actually form ions when they react. To make you MgCl2 reaalistic you need to take two electrons from the Mg. This leaves the Mg with only 10 electrons and a 2+ charge. Give one of Mg's electrons to each Cl. Now each Cl will have 18 electrons. Give each Cl a 1- charge.

The Mg 2+ will hold a Cl 1- on each end to form a linear shape.
