In recent times, as far as mainstream movies go, "The Departed" would have to be amongst my top ten. It's a cracker and Martin Scorsese was certainly worthy of the Oscar that he won...
Independant: have a look at "Abre los Ojos" (Open Your Eyes). A Spanish drama / SF which was remade by Hollywood as Liquid Sky. I saw it last night and I'm still reeling.
From a few years ago, "Blade Runner" and "The Castle" are my two faves....
