I'm working on my electrical engineering and I would like to go into industry. At the same time I want to do research. I plan to get masters and a Phd degrees in both electrical and computer engineering. I don't know whether industry is better even though I hear of lay-offs or whether academia is better

My understanding is you need the masters and Phd to really get into the research side of things. BUT if you can't get into a top program, then it might be best for you to go get some experience in the field (3-4 years worth) before you go back to school. The reality is the better school will put you at a much better position when you leave.
