Can anyone give me step by step instructions on prepping the ground before seeding, and what is the best seed for sun and shade in North Georgia?

there are some shady spots, but the reason moss was able to flourish is because there was no maintenance for many years. I see yards shadier than mine with lush green grass.

Grass won't grow where moss flourishes. It'll be too shady. You could just encourage the moss by pulling the weeds. Be careful of some of those invasive ground covers. A lot of them can take over your whole lawn. You could do bedding plants that like shade, like hostas. Or you could have big pots of impatiens and things with space to walk in between, and a bench in the shade.

The presence of moss is disturbing. This indicates the location is in almost complete shade! The weeds are another problem.
You can try to grow grass by trimming back and thinning any trees in the area to allow for air circulation and sunlight. Use a Round-Up type all veg. killer. Aerate the area to be redone and apply granular gypsum and lime about ten days later. Frankly, Ryegrass blends are your only option for any success in that shade environment.
There are many wonderful ground covers for shade areas. You can try periwinkle, a bed of hostas, the standard ivy, etc.
I had success with the most unusual plant - Wandering Jew!
I would truly look toward replacement with a shade garden vs. the turf. Good Luck.
