Even if you already have a job and are merely seeking one in a different part of the country? I recently had an interview about 400 miles from home, so I drove 800 miles to attend it. If this is a tax deductible expense, how is it deducted- by the cost of gas or by mile?

Maybe. If you are looking for a job in your current occupation you may be able to deduct job search expenses. See IRS Pub 529, page 6, for further information. Here's a link: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p529.pdf
