I am also a freshman and on the verge of making varsity. Ihave been working really hard both on and off the court, and have been putting in many hours. The truth is coatches look for many things, not just tennis ability. Coaches like to see character, like when it is time to pick up balls, some kids run to pick up balls and others run to get a drink of water. Also it helps to keep a high GPA (grade point average) because some coaches who are also teachers take that into account. Also be very kind to kids who aren't as good as you. Like if you are playing against a kid you know you could slaughter in a drill game, lob it ot tehm and let them hit the ball a few times instead of drilling it down their throat. Coaches like to see team players, and that might mean that if the only way that you are going to make varsity is by being a doubles player when you are typically a singles player then so be it. You have to be willing to make sacrifices to be on varsity. For example, me and this other freshman are the best two players on the team, but neither of us are on varsity because the coach is showing loyalty to the returning seniors who have played for her for three years. And sometimes that's just the way it is, sometimes you just can't make varsity no matter what you do. But the key is TRY YOUR BEST, and no matter what you should feel good with yourself in the end!

Well if your a freshman people will automatically pay attention to you to see if your a good player or not. In the first couple of days you do running activities, and they do not grade you on how good you are at running. The next days you play matches with other players on the team, and it is just like a tournament. If you lose a match to a person who was on jv than you would be placed on jv, it depends who you lose to. But if you keep winning than you will find your way to the varsity.
Get to know your coaches, although they cannot help you in anyway of getting onto varisty unless you win your matches, but still talk to ur coaches

I would help you out with this but my school wont allow freshman on their Varsity team, even if they are good enough. They say it looks bad for them. I (as a Freshman) can hardly be allowd on JV, even though I am talking my way to getting on it. Just do your best and even when your tired, keep on going!!! Dont ever stop UNTIL YOU FALL OVER. lol

You have to get a USTA ranking and be probaly top 100 in your state in order to make the Varsity tennis team your freshmen year but it also depends on what state your in.

Well I just made the team and some things you should do is try to be as consistent as possible cause if u always try to hit it hard to impress the coach and keep making unforced errors he or she is not going to want u on his team so try to be consistent with your groundstrokes. Also try to make friends with the seniors and other kids who are already on the team cause sometimes the coach talks to the seniors to see who is going to make it and who is not. So my main thing I say is be consistent try to keep the ball in as much as possible and be friendly to everyone. Hope it helps u :)
