I dont know the area but i DO know this - Its commonly thought you pay "good money" to live in a good area - that means your paying that bit extra for the luxuries that the good areas bring - like nice houses, nice parks, nice shops....you HOPE this will bring security with it -eg: less neighbours who sit at home all day on benefits - half build cars on their drives -youths with barking dogs - screaming kids in the street - rowing teenagers etc. The type of thing you dont want or 'expect' in less 'posh' areas.......... By buying a house in a 'smart' area your buying your way OUT of that....so a skatepark (although totally harmless to me as an individual) COULD be seen as a place to attract 'undesirables' - teenagers and kids who in turn sometimes have screaming girlfriends - barking dogs etc. These kids may want to sit in the park late and chat - nothing wrong with that either - BUT these neighbours might be worried that these visitors will leave the skatepark loudly - drunk - swearing - rowing - leaving lots of empty beer bottles and crisp packets in the park - this could in turn devalue thier expenisve homes in the long run. The world is unfair to skaters and teenagers I am afraid. :( Having lived in a house once opposite the gates of a play park i can honestly say though its hell having somewhere by you where kids and teenagers can gather .... / mainly cos of the shrieking girls !) BUT i feel sorry for them all as they have no where else to go.

There are two big problems with skateparks - The skaters and the liability.

No matter how nice the park may start out it will soon turn into a generic hang out for young teens who want to , well, hang out. The parking lot will get trashed out. Young teens will want to hang out, smoke, dump their trash on the ground, argue, play their music loud, race, fight, do burn-outs, etc.

Please, don't bore me with tales of how YOUR crowd would NEVER do that sort of thing. It doesn't matter. Another crowd just like YOUR crowd will show up and trash the place. Happens every time such a place is started.

The legal liabilities for a property owner are also an issue. Sooner or later some kid id going to get hurt at the place and the parents are going to sue. Period. Again, don't bore me with tales of how YOUR crowd would NEVER do that. You'd be surprised how many times businesses get sued.

Even parks owned and operated by the local Parks Department get hit with lawsuits on a regular basis. The warning signs are no guarantee of legal protection, especially when dealing with minors.

Here's a thought: If you are so adamant that your town should have a skate park, convince your parents to build one. If your parents are so believing in your claims of responsible behavior then let them fund the cost for security and insurance.

Probably because they paid a fortune for their homes and feel that the skaters would not be a desirable addition to their neighbourhood.
Some people see large groups of "scruffy" (skate clothing) looking teenagers (and young people) as an unattractive feature to add to their neighbour hood. (I am sure they will also say stuff about increased vandalism and petty crime. They don't want young people from less well off areas coming to their part of town as it increases the chance of theft.)
Not everyone wants skaters hanging round their area!
