Each player takes turns playing a stone on the intersection of the game board and trying to surround territory. Stones of the same color are considered connected if they are next to one another along one of the lines coming from the intersections.

When a stone or group of stones is surrounded by enemy stones on all lines coming from the intersection(s) it is on, it is captured. A stone may not commit "suicide", i.e. it cannot be played where it or the group it's connected to would be immediately captured. The exception is if this move would capture some enemy stones, thus creating some empty spaces (liberties).

Ko rule: You cannot repeat the exact same position from your turn before. Thus, if a stone of yours was captured, you cannot capture it back until you've played a move elsewhere. This is to avoid infinite loops

Play goes on like this until all empty spaces can be agreed upon by both players as belonging to one side or the other. Then both sides pass and count up the empty spaces of the territory they control. White usually gets "komi", points added to compensate for the advantage black has for going first. It's usually 7.5 now (the .5 is to avoid ties). Obviously, the one with the most points wins.

This probably seems clear as mud now. Check out the Interactive Way to Go (first link). It will give you clear instruction on the basics. Then find a local go club or go online and find someone to play. Play the first hundred games fairly quick just to get a feel for the game.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Go is a tactics game in wich 2 players fight for teritory. Each of them places one stone on the board, begining with black (the stones on the board can't be moved, only captured, and in this case they are removed from the board)
The stones are placed at the intersection of the lines(not in the sqares) 2 stones are conected only if they are on the same line. A stone placed on the board can be concidered a group, in this case there are 4 positions where you can conect other stones with the first one. This positions are called liberties.Filling the liberties with stones of the same colour makes the group get larger, so it will have more liberties. If the liberties are filled with the opponent's stones the group is captured. In order to survive, a group must have at least 2 liberties. If it only has one it means that the group is in atari and it can be captured.
There are 2 important rules in go: you can't comite suicide(you can't place a stone in a position that gets the group killed) and the ko rule(if a player closed a ko, the other player can't close the same ko when his turn comes, he has to move somewhere else) The ko is a certain position of the stones in wich when capturing a stone the player puts the stone he captured with in atari.
When the players are not at the same level of strengh, the strongest plays with white and black gets handicapls(places some stones on the board before the game begins, so the first move is made by white) If the game is not played with handicaps white has a disadvantage, so he gets a komi (5,5 poins). At the teritory counting there are 2 methodes of counting, the Japanese and the Chinese. The Japanese don't count as teritory the occupied positions while the Chinese do. For strategy you can read about go in yahoo games.

I would sign up with the KGB Go Ban. They have tutorials and you can watch higher ranking people plan and study their moves. Also, a lot of studying and playing will help you. I've tried playing for about 3 years now and am still very confused.
