Just connect the cable to each computer using the cross over cable, then make sure that each computer is on the same subnet (their IP address and network mask are something like 192.168.1.100 /255.255.255.0 for the first and 192.168.1.101 / 255.255.255.0 for the second.)
They should then be able to see each other. If you have problems browsing to each computer, do the following:
On each computer, add the other computer's IP address and name into the host file:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
192.168.1.100 computer1
192.168.1.101 computer2
then issue the command nbtstat -R
Each computer should then be able to see the other. I assume that this is a special connection? Because if you want to share an internet connection or something else, you'd really be better off with a router.

The simplest and easiest way to network 2 computers is to buy a router. Get a used one from Craigsliat or eBay. They are usually not more than $25.
Theh you don't have to worry about crossover, because the router does all that for you inside. All you need are conventional Cat 5 cables, and you don't have to be concerned where they go, or which one is the crossover, etc.
