When you need a rough compass, simply point the hour hand (or the part of your watch where that hour would be if it wasn‚t digital) at the sun.
Half way between that point and the 12:00 point on your watch points to the south. For example, if it is 8:00, point the 8 at the sun and south would be at the 10:00 position.

Look to see where the sun comes up or goes down. If it rises on your left and sets on your right as you look out into the garden from the house, the garden is south facing.

There is a difference between solar south and magnetic south
A very close approximation for solar south
get 2 sticks, wear pants
At noon time stand with your back to the sun, rotate your body until the shadow lines up with your body.
Slighty spread your legs
put 1 stick at the highest point that you can see sunshine
Put next stick about 1/2 thru your throat shadow
Now move around to the throat stick
When you line the 2 sticks this will be close to solar south
More acccurate would be to do this on summer solstic

The sun rises in the East which you should have on your left hand side, the sun sets in the West which you should have on your right hand side, you are now facing the South, and the North is at your back.
If there is no sun then moss or lichen only grow on the North side of a tree, and then the East should have on your left hand side, the sun sets in the West which you should have on your right hand side, you are now facing the South, and the North is at your back

Wherever the sun is at noon - that is due south.
If algae and moss grows on your walls, fences, tree trunks then its probably north facing.
The south side of the garden is more likely to have dryer soil, more light and sun loving (colourful) plants.
Curtains fade in a south facing window and paint generally blisters quicker.

When you stand with your body facing garden, the sun comes from your left side. Sun rises in the east then passes south thro' to west and then sets.About 3.00 in afternoon if sun is on your garden it is south facing. Hope that helps.

on a map
usually a graphic of some sort/diagram that shows that:
north is at the top
east is to the right
west is to the left
south is at the bottom
now watch when the sun rises in the morning..
and then figure from there which direction your garden is facing
