and how do you wash a down coat is it the same way you wash a down comforter?

Take the comforter to a Laundromat, because the machines are bigger and then use the gentle cycle, the down jacket can be washed in your machine using the gentle cycle

I refer to the washing label. I would guess that there are down coats that should not be washed. Be careful.

Woah... stop right there...
You need to go to the dry cleaners. Seriously washing comforters is risky to begin with but down comforters could very easily be ruined.
Dry clean dry clean dry clean.
