It's a Dell 6400 Inspiron notebook with Intel Centrino duo core processor and 1 GB RAM. I had the same problem with my previous Dell 630m notebook having the similar configuration.

Perhaps, you have a virus on A CD or a storage device. When you used the media, on your new laptop the same problem repeated. This explains why do you have had the same problem in both Laptops. Also you should Check the Startup Folder. You can search for it. If it contains any suspicious objects. delete them. Also go to run and type "msconfig". Select the Startup tab and again remove any suspicious objects. Also download a Startup Manager to remove entries from the registry which can be tricky for you to do manually. But how do you do this?

As soon as you turn on the power, get into Safe mode. Usually u have to press the F8 key rapidly to do this. Then select Safe Mode. If you are lucky, your computer will start in Safe Mode. Else If you had made a rescue disk, try it. Mayb it would help you.

I dont think there is any other way to than to repair your Windows installation with the Windows Disc. If still doesn't work, Then mayb you can only get your laptop formatted completely.

You have enough computing power to rule out the most common ways a laptop freezes up.

Hardware, I am ruling out hardware issues since this problem spans two computers. It is higly unlikely that two computer bought from the same supplier in different years would have the same problem.

Software: I am suggesting you have one of two problems. You have a program transfered from your previous computer that takes control by using100% of either your CPU cycles or RAM. Since the lap top is frozen it is hard to do a control alt. delete and see the applications running to see which one is using all the resources. This could happen randomly.

Virus: You copied your files to the new computer and may have copied a virus which does the same thing as the program in the software paragraph.

Question: does your computer ever boot up without freezing? If so, do you have a current antivirus system? If so, run the program and scan your entire computer.

I'm no expert but I was instructed by a computer guy to do certain maintenance...have virus program like Norton...delete cookies every now and then...empty recycle bin...get a spy ware program if not included in your Norton...download free Windows Defender...Defragment every 6 months. Also clean up your own documents now and then by discarding ones you don't need. Limit # of picture you save or back them up on a CD instead of hard drive.
