Well the traditional culture of the land is being replaced by Western values. Samurai, once honored and feared, are seen as outdated, useless, and dangerous. Isn't there a scene where a man if forced to cut off his traditional knot? That would be a Western / imperialist value being forced upon a person. The guns and cannons...doesn't get any more imperialistic than that, the old warriors are destroyed because they refuse to conform with Western ideas of "modern" or "progress."
