I keep thinking its like %CD_drive% or something like that. I can't find it. where can I find what are these variables are, and where are they defined?

I am not aware of an environment variable or alias customarily used for a CD drive in general. You can create one:
In the Start > Run dialog, type "cmd /c set CD_Drive=F:" (using whatever drive letter is correct). Click OK.
The following will open a list of environment variables in notepad if entered into the Run dialog (and click OK):
cmd /c set > c:\EnvVars.txt & notepad.exe c:\EnvVars.txt
Also, you can view or manage environment variables under My Computer. Wrong-click My Computer. Select the Advanced tab in the System Properties dialog that pops up. Then click Environment Variables at the bottom. The User variables apply to your login account. The System variables apply to every login account.

You're referring to a system variable... the CD drive isn't set up as a variable by the sindoes set up; you;d have to do that manually.
Go to Start > Control Panel > System. Select The advanced tab, then click the Environment Variables button. You can then add one for your CD or DVD drive.

A cd-rom drive is depicted as CD-R Drive & a cd-writer is shown as CD-RW Drive in XP. Now what do u mean by symboic names??
