Here's the deal, we have two computers set up beside each other and we want to be able to access our internet account from either one. I don't necessarily need to share files from one to the other, only have it set up to that I can be on the www researching something and hubby can also do what he needs to do on the net from his separate computer. We do have a router, which we've never hooked up, for lack of knowledge on how to do so? Please any help would be grand. We aren't trying to rip off our service provider, just wanna maybe play a game of pogo with each other once in awhile :) Thanks in advance for any advice.

Not much info on your connection, but here goes nothing. You need to set up a network with that router of yours. It takes cables called Ethernet cables, and they plug into Network Interface Cards or NICs for short on each computer. If you have a broadband modem (cable or DSL), that also plugs into the router, usually on port 1 or the port that is separate from the others. Now run the Network Setup Wizard in the Windows Control Panel on BOTH computers and you should be able to connect both to the internet at the same time.

Install the router. It connects in the network just after the broadband modem. Then both computers would plug into the router. Many broadband providers specifically allow a certain number of machines, usually like fiver or so, but some don't list a restriction. You wouldn't be ripping them off.

Set up is simple and most routers come with really good instructions. Many have a wizard to follow.

Once installed, you can use both at the same time or individually.

If you have DSL or Cable High Speed, then get a Router. This isn't ripping off your provider.

If you are using Dial-up, then you need to set up a network and make one of the computer SHARE the internet connection through that. But that is more complicated. You really have alot to learn about setting that up. It's difficult, troublesome and slow, so I recommend against it.

Good luck and Happy Computing

If the computers are reasonable close together buy
a switch - much cheaper than a router and less problems.

Since you have a router it isnt that hard, but it is not zero knowledge. Put the CD that came with the router in your CD rom drive, and follow their directions is the easiest way.

Connect the one that has the internet connection to the internet , connect them together with a crossover CAT 5 network cable and run the network connection wizard on both machines. That's it, job done
