Whose religion?
That's why the Constitution bars the establishment of a state religion.
I know most evangelicals due to the power they have had during the Bush years cling to the idea that it will be their form of Christianity, but that might not be true.
Would there be an attempt to limit judges or legislators to a specific religion?
Would privileges be granted to those member of a specific sect?
Would a Pope, or an Archbishop, Mullah or Rabbi, have more influence on US policy than our elected representatives? Or President?
For all those reasons and more our forefathers specifically chose not to designate one religion, more "American" than others, they chose not to make the US a religiously ruled country. Freedom of and from religion is far more practical and even-handed than trying to come to terms with a diverse societies' religious preferences.

For those who are active members of the current majority religion, it wouldn't change very much.

For those of us who are not members of the current majority religion, we'd be even more constantly innundated with religious doctrine and forced to put up with an even more intense constant stream of messages telling us our beliefs are wrong.

It would be terrible. We would all be forced to worship a certain god in a certain way. If we refused to do it exactly like that, we would be punished. It would be a lot like when the catholic church was the authority a long time ago. I don't think anyone wants that.
