The fish is the cheap part, the cost of setting up a proper tank is the expensive part. Since so many people are suggesting a goldfish I will list some things they will need. Fancy goldfish will need a minimum of 20 gallons each once fully grown (they can grow 8-12 inches), they are also very messy so they will need a very good filter, some gravel and plants, maybe an air pump, they don't need a heater but its good to keep a stable temp, the food and water conditioner, all the will be around 100 bucks and if your brother doesn't even want the fish then all that would be a waste.

A betta would need a tank, not a bowl unless you think your brother will do daily water changes to keep the ammonia down, of at least 2.5 gallons with a heater since they need water around 80 degrees and a filter unless he still wants to do lots of water changes, food and of course water conditioner, all of that would cost around 30 bucks. Again if your brother doesn't even want a fish then it will still be a waste.

Even with all the necessary equipment he will still need to do weekly water changes. Make sure your brother would even want a fish before you spend the money just so he can kill a fish.

whatever you do DON'T buy a goldfish. I would suggest starting off with something in the Platy family. They are inexpensive, hearty, and come in a variety of exciting colors. However I would suggest that you make sure that all are the same sex, otherwise you will end up with "little surprises". (do your own research because the people at the shop you are buying them from may not be able to sex them) Platys are a very good fish for the young ones (at the moment i'm helping a 5 yr old take care of Platys)

Plain Goldfish are the toughest kind of fish there is.

On the other hand, if your 9 year old is not old enough to be trusted to keep his hands out of the tank, and to feed them the correct amount (goldfish, and many others will eat untill they die, they just wont stop eating.) then even goldfish wont make it.
I had fish when I was nine and after one or two mishaps I leared well how to take care of them. But there is a probability that your first or second group of fishies wont make it past six months, so get something tough, and simple.
Once youve got a stable aquarium setup and youre sure there arent gonna be any little hands in the tank you can get about anything that will get along with the other fish. Fish are fish, unless they get sick, and goldfish don't get sick.

good luck!

A small tank works well with a small school (6-8) of White Cloud Mountain Minnows. Easy to care for. Semi-tropical. They can tolerate a lot of neglect and temperature fluctuations. They cost less than $1 each.
Put them in a 10 gallon aquarium and they will be fine. I've seen kits at my locally owned pet shop with hood, gravel, plants, thermometer, net, chemicals, food, filter, air pump, and heater for about $50.

I doubt he wants a fish, wants to take care of a fish or even knows what to do with a fish. Fish tend to make lousy pets. I suggest asking him if he wants a fish, then take him with you to the pet store if he does.

Picking out your fish is the best part. I suggest a betta, they are easy to keep.

If you just want one fish then I'd suggest a betta.
If you want a few, then zebra danios.
Your brother will be a lil too young to take care of fish all by himself, so you should help him out with the cleaning, feeding n all.

persist with Walmart. A tank under 5 gallons shouldn't value fairly a huge selection money, or a minimum of under $25. procuring online you will possibly could desire to pay delivery expenses, and what if it breaks?

Goldfish is the most easiest to care for and the least expensive.
Go a step further and go to a thrift store...you can find an interesting glass bowl.
Look in the toy section for lego, to use at the bottom of the glass bowl. And some other interesting toys to make a scene in the glass bowl.
