I used to wonder this myself. Now I have a son and find myself doing it too. I think we get so used to talking in months from the pregnancy and the first year of life that we continue on. I always thought when he was one I would just say one, but the developmental difference between a 12 month old and a 18 month old (who are both technically one) is huge, so I guess we feel the need to differentiate still at that age. I swear I'm not doing it past 2!!! Sometimes someone will say to me, Oh he's 38 months, and I actually have to calculate in my head how old they are!

Easier to say. We all do it. It's only when they hit 2 that we say "two", we don't go any further with the months.
You start out with them as babies and everyone asks how old and you say 6 months. You aren't going to say one half a year. We say it in months. So after 12, we just continue. Seems most people understand it better that way, and it's been done for years so people automatically compare to other ages..in the 'months.'
I hope this helps!

Because there is a HUGE difference between a 1 year old (12 months) and a 1 year old (23 months). There are so many things that they learn between this time that each month brings about as many changes as a whole year for older children. That's why.

Babies change rapidly. A one month old and a three month old are capable of doing different things. Even a 12 month old and an 18 month old are capable of different abilities. This distinguishes whether the child is on the right track for their age.

I will agree with all the answers but I would like to share a feeling that it just came to me when I red the question.Sometimes us moms we see our precious like babies even if they are 10 years old.So i think we do this subconsciously trying to keep the ''baby years'' as long as we can.I am a mom of 23 months and 10 days old little daughter and I am really scared of the day she will leave. sneaf!
