Fabulous movie! Inspiring! It made me want to go home and lift weights, LOL!
But, seriously, the pace was good, the acting was fine (nothing to write to the Academy Awards about but good, nonetheless).
Both my boyfriend and I liked it and he's into action. He loved the war scenes, they were good and gory. I loved the beauty of the scenes, the sets, the costumes, it was like paintings come to life...
I want a "Men of 300" calendar for Christmas!

I enjoyed it, but I was hoping that the movie would be a visually stunning and profound treatment of the actual history. Some of the things which were glaringly noticeable to me were (warning: some potential spoilers follow):
1) The oracle told Leonidas that he should not go to war. In history, the oracle told him that either Sparta would be conquered and enslaved or it would lose a king. This lends an undertone of the classical greek tragedy (plus, if you don't know, you keep asking yourself, "Is Leonidas going to buy it now?", and then, "Nope, not yet."). It also shows more accurately that he (as well as the rest of Sparta) was religiously devout. I guess it is not correct to have the main protagonist motivated by religious faith as well as bravery and saving his home (instead of freedom and reason-as if they were Athenians).
2) The persian army did not arrive by ships (they were too numerous). They walked there all the way from Turkey. It would have been cool to see the huge pontoon bridge they engineered across the Hellesponte.
3) They totally ignored the Athenian navy similarly using the terrain to block the persian's from landing troops behind the greeks (although they showed part of the persian fleet being destroyed in a storm-but out of context). They could of mentioned it at least, and the Athenians would have been a good contrast to the Spartans since they were motivated by reason and freedom instead of faith and duty. It is this optimal balance between the head and the heart which defines western civilization.
But if you ignore the fact that they gutted out a possible extra level of depth (and accuracy) to the script, it was a fun movie to watch (I just should have watched the TV documentary on the event after the movie).

IMO it was just OK. With the techno/industrial music in the background I thought I was watching a two hour long NIN video.
Pros: some good battle scenes. intense. Very styalistic/artistic in the way it is presented
Cons: Way too many slow motion scenes. A few here and there are fine but it really slowed the movie down (literally)
A lot of plot holes. Not uncommon in action films but some were very blatant.
Overacting
It's worth a look but this is one of those movies where I think some people will get a certain amount of anticappointment from. You know, when you look forward to something soooo much that it is almost impossible for it to live up to expectations.

I think it the most blatant piece of propaganda since WWII. Modern day Iran/Iraq were known as what in the past? PERSIA. The Spartans did not fight for freedom from tyranny or any thing of the sort, despite what the movie states. An interesting historical event used for U.S. pro war propoganda.

I thought it was a really great movie. Good story, and the special effects were amazing. I will go and see it again. I liked this film much better than Sin City.
