Hello!

Stereotypical tech support here to help you.. :)0

If you mean hook up literally with wires, then you will need a network switch or a router (wired / wireless, doesn't matter). Plug the cable modems ethernet cable into the router / switch's Internet plug, and then use two ethernet cables running from the router / switch's Ethernet ports (usually there are 4) into each computer's ethernet port. Then you run a home network set up wizard and make sure the workgroup has the same name.

If you mean wirelessly connect into the same network, then you will need a wireless router and 2 wireless adapters . With no insight into your budget I recommend you get a WRT54G router and 2 WUSB54G adapters . Once you get those items. you will need to plug your cable modem into the router and then either

A) connect the router to an ethernet cable to the computer and then follow the setup from the CD, after that, attach the wireless adapter to the second computer and run the setup from the CD

B) run the 2 setups on both computers from CD for the wireless adapter.

Make sure if you're running wireless you SECURE your network ASAP. It takes all of 5 seconds to get into the default administration page, go to the wireless security page, and set a WEP key that you DON'T know. Hence you are SHUT OUT from your own router.

Of course, if you do, just hold the reset button down on the back of the router and all will be fine.

Make SURE, whether you're wired or wireless, you run a home network set up wizard and make sure the workgroup has the same name.

Are you using dial up or broadband? I don't know how to do it on dial up, but on broadband you can use a router, with more cat 5 cables or get a wireless router if the computers have the wireless card. I personally like the wireless, as you can have people over for Lan Parties without worrying about cables, or not having enough outlets. The instructions that come with your router are easy to follow, and most have pictures to show you as well. I have used both the Belkin and Netgear routers, and they have pretty equal and reliable results.

you need to have either a router or a hub.

A router would be nice if you have broadband because it will connect to your broadband modem and perform serveral other network functions for you.

A hub is used just to connect some computers together (or provide additional network connections from a single line). Doing this will allow each computer to see each other.

If you already have one of these, then you just connect the new computer into the device. A router will (should) assign the address for you, but with a hub, you'll have to assign the address yourself. (Unless the hub is downstream from a router.)

If you have XP then just run the network connection wizard and it will tell you what to do as it goes through.

If it's just 2 computers then the only hardware you need is a crossover CAT 5 network cable

I gotta bounce in this bandwagon. Ask her, yet do no longer confront her. there are ordinary methods to ask which at the instant are not argumentative. If she is, you have have been given your answer and you do no longer could undercover agent. If she isn't, even nevertheless you probably did no longer argue you have probable ended the relationship. and that i myself pick to ask you why you're so insecure approximately it. lack of self belief and suspicions are the dying knell for a relationship. forget approximately the spying. It ain't nicely worth it.
