(Doesn't work if there is air on one side). You will still have to run the engine to get all the air out, so you will be adding more after the thermostat opens and circulates all the coolant.
How did you refill the coolant---thru the rad. only?
You should pull off the top rad hose from the rad and pour coolant down the hose into the block to fill one side of the thermostat - then reconnect the top rad hose. Then fill the rad to get fluid on the other side of the thermostat. Now with coolant on both sides of the thermostat it will work.
>> You are not driving yet - you are still working on it running it in the driveway.<<
You got new heads???Were they the identical heads(matching up coolant ports to coolant ports on the block.)?
100% sure those were the correct head gaskets and that you put them on correctly? After a couple of beers--any way looks like the right way.
If you are sure that no coolant passageways are blocked, and you did torque down the head properly all should be good. Head gasket is not reuseable. You have to get another set because the hot compression will leak into the water jacket.
I am assuming that all the other wiring for the fan motor is hooked up correctly and is working.......with the needle on hot the fan should be running.

Are you serious? First off running hot has nothing to do with the heads on an engine that would be keeping oil in the car second if it keeps running hot it can be a number of things start with the basic, like is their antifreeze or water at least in the car and if its not leaking like you said is the coolant making it to the radiator. if it is cool then check to see if your fans kick on after the cars been running for a min. if so cool, next; if after those visual and physically minimal maintenance tasks get you nowhere and your car still overheats then take it to the shop because its probably your cars thermostat not working or something wrong with the radiator or fans or the elements between these things that keep them working together.

The first thing everyone says is a thermostat.
1. Maybe bad thermostat
2. You need to get your radiator cored out or cleaned. It may be clogged up and not running enough water to cool the engine down. The lime deposits build up and the tubes that the water travels thru to cool off may be clogged up. So if the fans work and you put in the new thermostat then time for a radiator flush or cored out. If you have the money see the price on a new radiator or the price to get it cleaned and cored out.
3. If you vehicle has fans, they may not be working right. Either you need a new fan. You can check it out by hot wiring it directly to battery to see if it turns. If it turns then you need a new fan thermostat sensor.
Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the local Auto Zone or auto parts store in your area. It will troubleshoot and show you how to fix your vehicle. Also on the Auto Zone site has a section for vehicle maintenance

Could be any one of a number of things. You could have a thermostat that is bad and not opening when it should. If it has an electric cooling fan, it may not be working. The radiator could be clogged. One or both of the hoses could be bad and collapsing when it draws a suction trying to move water. Start with the thermostat, it's the easiest, and if that doesn't do it, go down the list.

Here is the ONLY possibility's--
1-Thermostat
2- Water pump
3- Air trapped in the motor ( will have to purge)
4- Stopped up Radiator
5- Head gasket is installed backwards
Now if the head gasket was installed backwards and YES it can and I have seen it before you will have to remove the heads and check to be sure. The gaskets are marked and will tell you which way they face on the motor.
