While other newly-independent states have often drifted into dictatorships, such as Pakistan, Cuba, Iran, etc., India under Nehru's guidance set out to be a real democracy, secular and egalitarian. In spite of the desire of Hindu extremists to make India a religious state, as happened in Pakistan, the constitution of the new India committed India to democracy and Humanism. India is mostly Hindu but religion is clearly separated from the state, so all faiths enjoy equal freedom. Step by step they are getting rid of the horrors of the religion-dominated state, such as burning widows on their husband's funeral pyre ("suttee") and the rigid caste system.
