Well, you know the gallon rule, right? One inch of fish per gallon. With a ten gallon, you could safely put 10-15 Neon Tetras in there or about five Mollies (Balloon/Dalmatian, Sailfins are a little too big to put in a 10 gallon) or a couple Fantail Goldfish (they might eventually need a bigger tank but for now, they should be fine) or three or four Swordtails or... There's a lot of options. What I would suggest is getting a few books on Freshwater Aquarium fish and reading about the different breeds, their requirements, etc. That way, not only can you decide which ones would live well together but you can also decide which ones would have similar water requirements. Oh and don't buy your fish from PetsMart, look for a good fish breeder who specializes in fish. Don't always take the advice of fish breeders, though... Sometimes, they'll tell you that you can fit certain fish or large amounts of fish in a tank that you really just can't. The reason why they do this is because they see you as a beginner, they know you won't know any better so you'll blindly take their advice, buy a large sum of fish with a nice price on them, they'll die in a week and you'll come back for more fish. It's a great marketing tactic but it sucks for you and the fish. Know what you're doing before you take the plunge.

I, myself had a 10 gallon tank. You probably know how to set it up and everything, but I would suggest a fliter so that the fish can get air, allowing it to live longer . the best kinds of fish to work with is goldfish, although messy, they're peaceful. If you don't care for goldfish, try tropical fish.

Fancy Guppies are always a great choice. They can peacefully be put with Swordtails, Tetras *Glow Light, Serpae, head light tail light, neon, ect...* Corydoras, Mollies, Platies, American dwarf frogs. Things like that. I just got a new 10 Gallon tank too. I got 5 new fancy tail guppies and an albino corydora. They are in my 2.5 gallon tank with my three feeder guppies that are kept as pets. Later today I'm transfering them to the 10 gallon tank. Good luck.
