The Cubs desire to get to the top right away and Alfonso Soriano has the potential to be a triplecrown winner if he cuts down on his strikeouts. He has speed ,power and a decent arm . Juan Pierre is a good leadoff hitter but I still think the Cubs come out ahead here. What the Cubs need is to get more balance in pitching and I think they have a good manager in Piniella.

No,and maybe.Pierre isn't the leadoff hitter that the Cubs needed. He doesn't walk enough to make up for his strikeouts.Soriano is somewhat similar to Pierre, but with more power. He won't take a walk and he'll strike out way too much.Soriano will be playing out of position at center field and with the Cubs' pitching staff, they won't be able to afford his inexperience playing another new position in another new park. The Cubs would have been better served spending money on some quality pitching, which is their weakness.Lilly and Marquis aren't going to be the answer, nor will Neal Cotts in the bullpen.Their lack of pitching will be their downfall, again.

Did you watch the Cubs last year? Pierre was terrible. Sure he got stolen bases, but he batted like .230. Now we have a guy in Alfonso who can steal 40 bases, hit 40 homeruns, and bat .300 or above.

I really thought Pierre was a good pick-up when we got him but he did not play well for the cubs. Not a good fit. Soriano will be a better fit. If he did that good last year in DC which is a pitchers park and really no protection in that line-up, just imagine what he will do when pitchers know that got Lee and Ramirez shortly after him. Im all for Soriano...
How about picking up Ichiro in the offseason to play Center...

They should of kep Juan Pierre. He is a great out fielder, lead off hitter. He's mighty speedy and gets alot of stolen bases. Alfonso is pretty much the same as Juan Pierre, but with a more commonly known name.

I think that Soriano will fit in with the Cubs. They didn't need Pierre. The Cubs will improve this year.

Pierre won't be missed. Alfonso is going to work into Pinella's system just fine. Cubs win the WS in six games.

I'm not sure if Pierre should have been kept, but the Cubs have enough issues without having a defensive liability (and possible clubhouse cancer) in CF, which is exactly what they have in Soriano.

If the Cubs are really having to choose between Cotts, Prior, and Miller for starting pitching spots, they have problems. If they have to choose between Dempster and Wood for a closer, they have problems.
