Because if it's out in the open, everyone would grab it, and it would no longer be as tempting as when it's hidden, waiting to be discovered.

Why indeed. I would guess they don't want anyone finding it and spending it, but they would be far more practical to put it in a bank and let it earn some interest, or maybe invest in real estate.

they like to dig. they don't like sharing their gold so if you found a way to the other side of the rainbow they have buried it as a security measure.
