New Rebuilt 74 350 Engine in a 1988 Chevy truck. I port and polished the heads, new Valves, everything done besides new valve guides. Anyways, When I take off from a stop, you can hear like the valves chattering noise, pretty bad. Is it fast in time or what here? It seems to start pretty nice, but I had t olike turn up the idle speed a little on the Carb after the rebuild. The other new 350 I had in it, (was an 88 350 2 bolt main), and carb was like set to it. i put a new distribtor in it as well too. Thanks for any info.

Fixed it! I turned the shaft a tooth and put the cap back on. It was a little fast in time. Thanks for answers.

If the valves are making noise, they will do it sitting still too. Sounds like it only does it while driving that would not be valves.

It could be the hydraulic lifters are bad or the rockers need to be adjusted. Need to remove the valve covers and listen to the engine run, you can buy clips that slip over the rockers that prevent the oil from splashing up. You didn't mention if the valve train was new or used, so i am just guessing. The balls under the rockers are a wear item as well and should be replaced or if using the old ones they need to stay matched with the old rockers, because they wear out in different patterns and need to stay together as a pair. Hope this helps!

Sounds like you just need to adjust the valves again. That is what the clattering sound is from. Also if you run low on oil, you will get the clattering sound also.

Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the local Auto Zone or auto parts store in your area. It will troubleshoot and show you how to fix your vehicle. Also on the Auto Zone site has a section for vehicle maintenance
