I'm just a young girl minding my own business. The new rules of random stop and search in subways and buses...is this necessary?

The subway has thousands of entrances that terrorists can get thru with no detection. Does Bush think manning only the busy entrances is going to stop a terrorist?
Soon the govt will have the right to stop me anytime anywhere to seach my bag for NO APPARENT REASON. I was just WALKING for godsake!
MEANWHILE, MEXICAN AND CANADIAN BORDERS ARE WIDE OPEN!! WHO'S MANNING THE BORDERS?

Seems like most people answering this question believe losing the right to privacy and illegal search and seizure is a small price to pay for security.
I see that as a huge price to pay for security. I don't, however, see any other practical solutions for safety in mass transit systems like those in NYC. Even tightened border crossings won't keep terrorist out of the country.

You asked this last week. I would have thought you would have been out of the subway by now. Here you go again If you do not want to take the chance of being searched take the bus or walk. Otherwise do not put anything in your bag you don't want a cop to see. Do you think we have learned nothing from 9-11 or the London Underground attacks. If they did not do searches and there was an attack you would complain as to why no one was doing searches. Now what is it going to take to make you happy. I checked you have asked this question 14 times.

you want rights, then move out of that fascist state. Not quite sure it was Bush who sent them in the subways to search bags. Pretty sure that would be handled by your state legislator. But you crazy liberals like to blame him for everything. If you feel so strongly about it, the next time it happens refuse to let them search you and if necessary defend your right to privacy by killing the transgressor. Hey, you just might start a revolution and we can take this country back. Best of luck

You have rights, and the police are violating them by searching you without probable cause. This doesn't make us safer, and despite what the person above said, you should NOT simply accept that you have to give up your civil liberties. Take a look at the link below for a good summary of how to resist these illegal searches.

Sometimes even the government does illegal things. As it stands now, the federal District Court for Southern New York (SDNY) ruled that the searches can go ahead. That decision had a highly questionable balancing test, and I, for one, hope that it will get overturned. In the mean time, if you feel that these searches are degrading / humiliating, then don't assent to them. Calmly walk out of the station and go to the next one.

I happen to think that the random stops and searches are a small price to pay for safety, and if you have nothing to hide, then you shouldn't be concerned.

But I am surprised that no one seems to be upset by this. In a land that is known for its freedoms, it seems a little strange that no one has a problem with this governmental infringement on an individual's rights and privacy. Must be all the Republicans are awake this morning...

Like taking off your shoes at the airport, it is all about making people feel more secure more than about actually making themm more secure.

The interesting question is: if they search your bag and find some pot, can you be convicted of possession, since there was no probable cause to search you.

thats just life in this post 9/11 world. I mean does it make sense to search a 89 year old lady in a wheelchair before she gets on a Plane? ........Damn Right it does, the terrorists are very creative, I look at it this way, if I have nothing to hide, why do I care if I am randomly searched? Especially if it causes a raghead terrorist to be caught before he can blow his @ss up and take you and me with him

You obviously respect yourself enough to endanger the lives of everyone around you.

Do everyone a favor: if you don't want your bags searched, stay home.

Better yet, go to the ACLU and file a complaint! I guarantee you they'll do everything but strip search you before you'r'e allowed to enter their building!

The cops in NYC are not controlled by Bush. The NYPD have their own anti terror methods and protocols to eliminate threats to terror.
