you should take a prenatal vitamin everyday up until the day that you have your baby, it helps the baby develop much better.

The best person to ask this question is your GP. As a general rule folic acid is taken in early preganncy (upto 12 weeks) to prevent neural tube defects like spina bifida, the dose differs in women who already had such a birth before. low dose Folic acid is recomended for prevention of some psychiatric problems anyway, considering this it is not going to any problem if one continues it after 12 weeks of pregnancy.

the best thing to do is take folic acid as soon as you decide to start trying for a baby or as soon as you find out if it wasnt planned for the first 12 weeks. After that folic acid on its own has no benefits on its own so you should take a prenatal vitamin tablet that has all your vitamins and minerals that a pregnant woman needs and folic acid
hope this helps

400 mg orally of folic acid daily is recommended for women who are planning to get pregnant as part of their antenatal care. It is a prophylactic measure in-order to prevent some neurological conditions that the western society is at risk of.
There is no scientific evidence that using folic acid after 12 weeks in pregnancy would help in preventing these conditions .
There is also no harm noted in continual usage of folic acid during pregnancy.

There would be no benefit for taking it after this time. Folic acid is taken to prevent spina bifida and other birth defects in babies, these things will occur in the very first few weeks of pregnancy.

You can. But you dont need it. You get all you need from your diet.
Folic acid, and the lack there of, causes issue in the first 8-10 weeks of pregnancy. This is the time that the embryo is forming is spinal column.
So technically you use and need the most before you even know you're pregnant. After that your diet and fortified foods are plenty.
Your prenatal will have more than enough for all of your pregnancy.

Yes, you could carry on if you wanted, but there are no practical benefits. The folic acid helps prevent spina bifida which would have manifested before that time.

You should take it from before conception, if not from the moment you find out you are pregnant, then take it through all of you pregnancy, that's what the doctor told me.
