Chicago is an awesome place to visit. I was just there in February. I stayed at the Homewood Suites downtown. Perfect place as it is across the street from Rock Bottom Microbrewery, so if you want to stumble home you can. Also check out the Piece Brewery, the beer is great, but the Pizza is award winning and out of this world. So many good things I know and can say about Chicago. Go for it.

Yes. It's a great city. I've lived nearby all my life and take it for granted but there is so much to do.
A few things you might not think to do but are really worth it:
Take an archetecual boat tour on the Chicago river (tickets at Navy Pier). It's fascinating. It points out land marks and gives a better view of some than you'd get on the street. It gives a lot of history including the Chicago Fire.
The Chicago Ghost tours are also fascinating historical interesting and creepy!
Take a night ride on the many horse drawn carriages, especially at Christmas time. Again, many landmarks and history will be pointed out. It's a pretty way to see the water tower lit up at night.
Brookfield zoo is really nice too.
I could go on. Check out Fodor or Frommes guides on line. (might not be spelled right)

Let us all count the ways! What is your interest? It doesn't matter because Chicago has it. The only real exception would be constant sun -- for that you want Phoenix.
Yet if you're here in the summer you will get lots of sun and heat and even beaches to enjoy it on. Many people forget that Lake Michigan is practically an Inland sea, and freshwater (the largest collection of it along with the other four Great Lakes)
History? Chicago is the practically the cradle of American History! It is the history of American Architecture and the skyscraper. You can retrace much of the history of Labor movement here. And you'll see what inspired great writers like Carl Sandberg, Mike Royko, and countless others.
Did you read the book The Devil and the White City? I highly recommend it. It will open your eyes to just how culturally significant this city is. The Chicago Cultural Center offers tours related to the book as well among many other tours and exhibits. The Chcago Architectural Foundation offers tours too, including renowned boat tours along the lake and river.
Sports -- Cubs, Sox, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks, Wolves, Sky, Rockers, Fire, and many suburban minor league baseball teams. Not to mention UIC, Northwestern, Depaul, at the collegiate level.
Culture -- world renowned museums -- the Art Museum, Field Museum (think Ben Stiller's last movie for a comic take), Museum of Science and Industry, Adler Planetarium, Museum of Contemporary Art. Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the last FREE zoos in the world. Brookfield Zoo is an excellent zoo accessible by train from the city. Ther eare many great outdoor spaces with sculptures by Picasso, Miro, Chagall, and others. Millennium Park is a space like none other in the world with the bean (actually cloud gate but you'll see why bean caught on), Gehry's Bandshell, the Lurie Garden, and Crown Fountain, one of the world's best people-watching spaces once it's warm enough to get wet.
Chicago is renowned for its dining at ALL levels, from Billy Goat Tavern (cheeburger cheeburger!) to Gino's East and Uno's Pizza to the Signature Room (Hancock 95th floor), the last one pricey but worth it for the view, food, and decor). And being such a big city any ethnic group you can think of has a restaurant here! Can't make up your mind what to eat? Go to Foodlife in Water Tower Place where they have just about everything. And the lakefront in the summer has to be the best damn smelling barbecue in the world! And that's not including the Taste of Chicago (the two weeks up to July 4) festival where you can try deep fried alligator among the many samplings along with free concerts.
Transportation is very good -- the only complaint is that pretty much everything radiates from the city center, apart from busses which are really pretty nice. CTA is the local train system (the "L") and Metra is the way to many suburbs. If you're hrer for an extended time consider getting a Chcago Card. And if you want an inpensive and practical boat ride the Wendella boats can tak you from the Union Station and Olgilvie Train Stations to Michigan Avenue and Navy Pier. It is a great way to get from the Sears Tower to Navy Pier.
If you're into nightlife, with 3M people many of who are young professionals there is plenty of that. Rush Street and Wrigleyville are the most popular areas.
Shopping -- some of the world's best. And if you're not into the actual shopping the architecture it is in is excellent (I'm an architect so that will be a recurring theme in my comments). Water Tower Place is the first urban mall built in 1971 -- it still looks outstanding for its age.
If you get the chance it is really worth the trip to see some of the ethnic neighborhoods. Chinatown to the south, Two Polish neighborhoods, Archer Avenue out by Midway Airport (CTA Orange Line) and Milwaukee Avenue Logan Square (CTA blue line), and Devon Avenue with a wonderful Indian/Pakistan area that permeates with curry.
Recreation is phenominal -- you will want to get a workout along the lake, be it walking, rollerblading, cycling, canoeing, or just tanning on a lucky day. The Lakefront parks and beaches are a tremendous resource. And Navy Pier is a great hangout that will make the experience complete.

Absolutely. Train arrivals should wait for rolling stock to stop
at spur lines as the central yards have Railroads Bulls. Most of the city camping traditional opportunities are taken or too
prone to police patrol but the recent vogue in building facade climbing has opened vast areas of rooftop for your temporary
residence. Leaking water towers are excellent for bathing and potable resources. Roof flues warm clever tenting and tin supper plates of freshly snared city pigeon. Enjoy.

It is a good place to visit. It depends what you like to do. There are museums and great restaurants and some good walks on nice days. It isn't really a good place if you are "outdoorsey" thought. But if you like to eat and drink you'll fit in.
