Mine is about $100 more a year than when I had a metric cruiser. It costs more to replace a Harley. I was calling around for insurance on my Honda Shadow, one company thought it was a sport bike and quoted me almost $2000 a year. Thats about 8 times what I was paying.

RE :Is insurance more expensive on Harley's than most other bikes ?
Yes ,I realize they cost more than your average bike but does that automatically raise the cost of insurance?

Harleys typically have slightly higher insurance rates than metric cruisers, primarily due to their much higher values and their greater theft rate; however, I have found that the insurance on my H-D is not too much higher than on my metric cruiser. That being said, insurance on any Harley will be much lower than for any sport bike, especially 600cc, 1,000cc and up sport bikes, reflecting the incredibly high number of accidents and insurance claims represented by that type of motorcycle. I know several people (over 25, no accidents) who purchased 1,000cc class sport bikes (CBR100RR, GSXR, etc.) and looked for insurance AFTER purchasing them, who were unable to obtain insurance for less than $10,000 per year, up to $20,000 per year. Needless to say, they have brand new bikes sitting in their garages that they have never ridden, can't license (no insurance), and are now for sale - and they're going to take a bath on them, financially. So, no, Harleys don't have the highest insurance rates, that "honor" belongs to the various sport bikes.

Insurance is based on value of motorcycle and if it is in the high theft list. So a cycle that gets stolen once a year to one that gets stolen once a day, I would wonder which one would have higher insurance.

full coverage is a bit more expensive, but it also depends on how much the deductable, the amount of personal injury liability, etc. if u go 'cheep', u'll get cheap. but if u go down, u might need more than what ins will pay. and those that have a clean driving record and have the endorsement will get a break on it. sport bikes usually get reamed.....squids killing themselves on high speed rice rockets.

It depends on what coverage you want, compusory is just based on engine size, but, if you want full coverage, fire, theft, and collision, then price and theft statistics will make a difference. At least in Massachusetts thats how it works.
